Vinesh Phogat Olympics: Commonwealth and Asian Games Dominance

Vinesh Phogat is a big name in the Olympics and probably doesn’t need to tell people about her excellence in Indian wrestling. A string of impressive performances in the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games no doubt stands her out as an asset to India, inspiring a whole generation of young wrestlers.

Early Life and Beginnings

Born in Balali, Haryana, the young Vinesh Phogat was initiated into wrestling by her uncle, the great coach Mahavir Singh Phogat. However, Phogat never gave up. The villagers also opposed her for she was doing what they assumed to be a suitable game for men. She persisted and continued to learn the art under the guidance of her uncle. Soon, her determination and talent showed as she started winning medals at the national and international levels.

Olympic Exploits

Her tryst with the Olympics began in the 2016 Rio Olympics, competing in the 48kg category. The early ouster only whetted her appetite to succeed in the biggest arena. Competing in the 53kg category in the 2020 edition in Tokyo, Phogat made it into the quarterfinals before bowing out. In the 2024 Paris Olympics, the bitter-sweet moment came the way of Phogat.

She first defeated the reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the opening round, then went on to defeat opponents from Ukraine and Cuba to make it to the finals. That was, however, where disaster struck as she was ruled out of the competition after weighing a massive 100 grams over the stipulated weight limit of 50kg during the weigh-in on the morning of the final. The sensational appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against Phogat’s winning was rejected, and hence her dream of an Olympic silver medal went buried.
